Research Assistant turns AstraZeneca's scattered data into a single search

The main problem in biomedical research is not the absence of information but its dispersal across incompatible sources. AstraZeneca's Research Assistant tries to address exactly that: it brings together scientific papers, knowledge graphs, chemical data, clinical trials, safety information, expression data and internal experimental systems.

That matters more than yet another chat with an LLM. The system should not merely phrase a plausible answer but show which materials it found it on and give a link to the original. A scientist can check the conclusion and continue the research in the primary sources.

The interface has two modes. A fast one answers direct questions, while a multi-step one is meant for more complex research tasks. That approach looks more practical than a universal "think harder" mode: simple requests need no surplus reasoning, while complex ones can be broken into a sequence of actions.

In essence Research Assistant is neither a replacement for a specialist nor an autonomous researcher. It is a navigation layer over various databases that reduces switching between them. Its value is determined not by the elegance of the dialogue but by how completely the system finds the necessary sources and how easily a person can check the result.

The limitations are substantial too. The technical note gives no quantitative estimates of accuracy, no comparison with other tools and no results of independent testing. The system is described as an internal AstraZeneca development, so nothing in the material implies it is available to outside users. Nor are the details of operating cost disclosed.
