OpenAI's desktop app opens access on Linux not only to ChatGPT but also to ChatGPT Work and Codex. Its preview status and short list of distributions, however, make it more of a compatibility check than a finished solution for everyone.
Linux has got a dedicated desktop entry point to several OpenAI tools at once: ChatGPT, ChatGPT Work and the Codex AI agent. The practical value here is not one more chat window but that the working scenario is now assembled in a single application.
The app is distributed in deb and rpm formats, with builds available for the x64 and ARM64 architectures. That covers the typical Linux installation options and does not lock users to one hardware platform.
But the main nuance is that the application is still at the preview stage. Specific versions of Ubuntu, Debian and Fedora are supported: Ubuntu 24.04/26.04, Debian 13 and Fedora 43/44.
In other words, OpenAI is closing a noticeable gap without promising a universal Linux client. If your distribution and architecture are on the stated list, it is worth trying; for everyone else the question of compatibility stays open for now.
