  3. Chinese AI Models Face Shutdown in Russia
1 min read

In short

Experts warn that the shutdown of Chinese AI models will slow the development of Russia’s AI industry and increase costs. A strategic shift will be required to develop sovereign AI.

Chinese developers may restrict external access to their artificial intelligence models. This would deal a serious blow to the Russian AI industry, according to analysts at Sovcombank.

Implications for Russia

If Chinese models become closed-source, Russian companies will have to:

  • increase costs for developing their own solutions;
  • slow down the pace of development due to the loss of access to cutting-edge technologies;
  • make a “strategic pivot” toward creating world-class sovereign AI—a process that is both costly and time-consuming.

Currently, many Russian projects rely on open-source Chinese models (for example, from Baidu and Alibaba). Without them, the industry will lose a vital foundation.

What’s Next

Experts advise not to delay the transition to in-house developments. However, without government support and investment, this will be extremely difficult to achieve.
