In short

Amazon has launched an internal investigation into employees who, at a hearing in Seattle, criticized the expansion of its AI infrastructure and called for regulation. The three engineers face disciplinary action, including possible termination.

Amazon has launched an internal investigation into a group of employees who publicly spoke out against the rapid expansion of AI data centers. This followed a Seattle City Council hearing where a one-year moratorium on the construction of new large-scale data centers was discussed.

Testimony and Consequences

Five Amazon employees participated in the hearings and criticized tech giants’ massive investments in AI, calling the current trend “the deployment of AI at any cost.” Afterward, three of them were summoned to HR and informed that their public statements were being investigated for potential violations of corporate policies.

> According to the complaint, the employees were made to understand that the investigation could lead to disciplinary action, including termination. One of the employees noted that such language creates a sense of pressure and uncertainty.

Context and the Company’s Response

Amazon states that the investigation concerns only compliance with internal policies governing public statements made on behalf of the company. The employees involved are members of Amazon Employees for Climate Justice, a group that has previously criticized the company’s environmental policies and working conditions. In 2020, two of the group’s co-founders were fired after voicing public criticism.

The conflict is unfolding against the backdrop of Amazon’s massive investments in AI infrastructure—the company plans to spend up to $200 billion this year, while simultaneously laying off about 30,000 corporate employees. Public opposition is also growing: a significant portion of U.S. residents are concerned about the environmental impact of data center construction.
