  3. ByteDance will release its own AI chips in 2025
1 min read

In short

The Chinese company ByteDance is preparing to launch AI chips of its own design. They are expected to be integrated into the company’s computing infrastructure as early as next year. The American company Qualcomm is reportedly involved in the development of the chips.

ByteDance, best known as the creator of TikTok, is moving toward technological independence in the semiconductor sector. According to available information, as early as next year, it will begin integrating in-house AI chips into its computing infrastructure.

Qualcomm and Custom Designs

At a recent quarterly event, the American company Qualcomm revealed some details about its collaboration with major players in the cloud market. Specifically, it was confirmed that the company:

  • supplies off-the-shelf chips to Meta;
  • is developing custom solutions for two other major cloud companies.

Although Qualcomm did not directly name its partners on these custom projects, industry sources had previously discussed the American manufacturer’s possible involvement in developing a chip for ByteDance.

ByteDance’s Strategy

ByteDance’s pursuit of its own semiconductor solutions is part of a broader trend: China’s largest technology companies are actively investing in chip development, seeking to reduce their dependence on foreign suppliers amid tightening U.S. export restrictions.

The implementation of its own AI accelerators will allow ByteDance to optimize its infrastructure for the specifics of its tasks—from recommendation algorithms to generative AI—while simultaneously reducing costs associated with purchasing off-the-shelf solutions.
